Tractors are most commonly used on farm and construction sites, where they tend to encounter plenty of dirt. While it’s certainly difficult to keep a tractor clean under these conditions, regular cleanings can help discourage long-term corrosion and lead to better overall performance. Use this guide from Flieg’s Equipment to help make the process of keeping your tractor clean easier.

1. Remove Debris

Tractors tend to attract a lot of big debris, including leaves, grass, mud, and twigs. Give your tractor a pass over using a leaf blower to remove some of these debris before you start washing the tractor. A tractor’s undercarriage  tends to be the most difficult to keep clean, so give that part some extra attention.

2. Rinse & Wash Exterior

Hand washing a tractor takes a lot of time and effort, but it’s the best way to ensure that your equipment gets a thorough cleaning. Wipe down your tractor using a bucket of soapy water and a sponge. We recommend rinsing as you go to avoid soap build-up. If you’re having trouble with getting the nooks and crannies clean, use a scrub brush. For filthy tractor tires, try using a large automotive brush.

Washing your tractor using a pressure washer will usually result in a faster if less thorough cleaning. When using a pressure washer, clean top to bottom to prevent dirty water from seeping down into areas that you’ve already cleaned. Be careful not to damage delicate components like mirrors or sensors by spraying them directly. You also need to be careful not to accidentally get water in your tractor’s engine.

3. Dry and Apply Wax

You can choose to air dry your tractor, or make the process go faster by using an air compressor or leaf blower. Once your tractor has fully dried, apply a protective wax coating and buff it as desired.

4. Wipe Down Interior

Don’t forget to clean the inside of your tractor as well! Wipe down the controls and seats to remove any traces of dirt and mud. Use a shop vacuum to clean out your tractor’s floodboards.
